Acromegaly

Condition usually in middle-aged adults from hypersecretion of growth (thickening of the bones and soft tissues with noticeable effects on feet, hands, and face. -caused mostly from a benign tumor)

Carcinoid tumor

Slow-growing type of cancer that can arise in gastrointestinal tract, lungs, ovaries, and testes.

Cretinism

Condition in which the development of the body and brain has been inhibited

Ductless gland

Containing no duct, endocrine glands that secrete hormones directly into blood or lymph without going through duct

Endocrine

Pertaining to glands that secrete substances directly into the blood

Gonads

Organs that produce male(testes) or female (ovaries) sex cells, sperm or ova

Hormone

Substance produced within one organ and secreted directly into the circulation to exert its effects at a distant location.

Insulin-like growth factor(IGF)

A stimulator of cell growth and proliferation

Somatomedins

Peptides in the plasma that stimulate cellular growth and have insulin-like activity

Somatostatin

Inhibitory hormone that blocks the release of gonadotropin (GH) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)

Target organ

Specific tissue where a hormone exerts its action

Tropic hormone

Hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary that binds to a receptor on another endocrine gland

8 major endocrine glands

Pineal, Pituitary, Thyroid, Thymus, Adrenal, Pancreas, Ovary, and Testis

Second Messenger

Is the chemical that is able to carry out the intended action of the hormone inside the cell

Cyclic adenine monophosphate (cAMP)

Best-known second messenger

Pituitary gland

"Master Gland" of endocrine system and controls many of other glands. (Located in brain attached to base of hypothalamus)

Two lobes: anterior (adenohypophysis) and posterior (neurohypophysis)

The Releasing Hormones

Thyrotropic-releasing hormone [TRH], Corticotropin-releasing hormone [CRH], Growth hormone-releasing hormone [GHRH], and Gonadotropin-releasing hormone [GnRH]
