Antidepressants used for panic disorder:

i. SSRIs are first-line drugs for panic disorder. At this time, only two SSRIs – paroxetine [Paxil] and sertraline [Zoloft] – are approved for this disorder. The SSRIs decrease the frequency and intensity of attacks, anticipatory anxiety, and avoidance behavior
ii. TCAs are second-line drugs for panic disorder. They should be used only after a trial with at least on SSRI has failed. Although they are as effective as SSRIs, they are not as well tolerated. The TCAs include imipramine [Tofranil] and clomipramine [Anafranil] iii. MOAs such as phenelzine are very effective in panic disorder but are difficult to use |
