Runoff

Precipitation exceeds soils capacity to hold water

Sheet wash

Initial pour as a thin sheet down a slope

Rill

Channels of sheet wash

Gullies

Strong channels

Epemeral flow

Usually dry river beds

Perennial flow

Carries water year round

Drainage Basin

Land area where water drains to a common stream. (Also called watershed or catchment)

Solution

Smallest insoluble solids being carried by suspension.

Saltation

Large particles too heavy to be carried by buoyancy, so they bounce along the surface.

Traction

Big rocks that slide along the bottom of the river

Bar

Accumulation of sediments on the streambed.

Alluvium

General term for all stream deposits.

Straight channels

Parallel linear banks. Usually made by people.

Braided channels

Streams carrying lotsa sediment relative to its discharge. Large bars cause the stream to seperate then rejoin later. Characterized by coarse settlements.

Meandering channels

Broad sweeping bends. High lateral erosion. Found in flat humid areas. Characterized by small, fine sediments.

Upper course

Stream flow in contact with bedrock. Gravity causes water to flow downstream. Vertical erosion and v shaped valleys.

Middle course

Moderate gradient. Moderately smooth channel bed. Meandering with floodplains.

Lower course

Almost flat. Flow by stream energy rather than gravity. Large meander and wide floodplains.

Deltas

Stream flows into larger body of water. Deposits lots of sediments.
