How many people in this room have owned a pet?
How many people have had to deal with losing a pet?
According to the ASPCA every year 3-4 million animals are euthanized in kill shelters across the nation.
Kill shelters are ending the lives of millions of animals every year and should be brought to an end.
This is relevant because: According to the American Humane Society, 60% of Americans in the 2011-2012 year reported owning at least one dog, while 33% of Americans reported owning at least one cat.
I am very credible on this issue because Animals have always surrounded me and my family has always been involved in the animal rights movement. Most of the animal rights laws in Ohio were actually created by my Uncle.
Today I will be talking about three main points: what kill shelters are and why they are bad, other people getting involved in the movement, and what you can do to get involved in the movement.
What is a kill shelter and why is it bad?
Open admission shelter in which animals are taken in until they run out of room, then at that time animals are killed to make more room for animals needing a place to stay.
What makes these shelters horrible is the methods of murdering the animals- gas chambers. According to No Kill Advocacy Center...(powerpoint)
Who is supporting the move?
Various celebrities are supporting no kill shelters: singer Billy Joel, model/business woman Tyra Banks, actress Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order), dog whisperer Caesar Milan, singer Mya, and Martha Stewart are just a few.
What can you do?
According to the National Rescue League, the easiest step is to sign the petition
Volunteer time to animal shelters--many times shelters are forced to become kil shelters because of their lack of staff support
If you are looking to buy a pet, turn to adoption. There are many animals looking for a home at all ages
To wrap things up, there are a lot of downfalls to these shelters. They cause a lot of pain and death to innocent animals. But there is still a lot we can do to put an end to them--the most important is signing the petition, so take a few minutes and sign the petition to help save millions of these animals in the next year
