Back in 2018, there was an adult female cat named Harmony, who was just under one years old, that had just given birth to two kittens, with only one managing to survive. Before all of this occurred, she was surrendered to a county shelter in Las Vegas, where she would be euthanized after birth.

You should adopt, don’t shop because it’s both beneficial for you and of course the animals.

1. You will simply save a life. According to ASPCA, whose mission is to provide effective prevention of cruelty towards animals, approximately 6.5 million companion animals are placed into shelters every year across the nation. Half of them are dogs and the other half are cats. Approximately 3.3 million of that 6.5 are actually adopted. According to dosomething.org, one of the nations leading nonprofit organizations, 2.7 million animals are euthanized yearly due to lack of space in no-kill shelters and lack of adoptive homes.

2. Terrible living conditions. According to paws.org, or the Progressive Animal Welfare Society, roughly 90% of animals in pet stores come from puppy mills, which are commercial dog breeding facilities that are regarded as inhumane. Hundreds of dogs are kept in their cages for the entirety of their life. They are confined to overcrowded cages with minimal shelter from extreme weather conditions.

They are given no choice but to stand and sleep in their own bodily waste. Sick or dying animals receive little to no veterinary care.

Adult animals are forced to continuously breed until they are no longer able to, to which they are then after discarded. These facilities are also highly motivated by profit.

3. It costs less. According to pactforanimals.org, the initial cost of an animal from a breeder is about $3000, which doesn’t include anything else. You receive just the pet. Pets from shelters however can range from 50-500$. Included in that price is the cost of what you will need in order to care for this pet to be in good health. They factor in things at a lower cost such as pet insurance or even accessories.

Your adoption fees will also go back into saving the life of another animal rather than somebody else’s pocket.

Today, I talked about why you should adopt, don’t shop. I talked about the amount of lives you can save, the terrible living conditions in which a lot of these animals are living in, and the cost of adopting from shelters vs pet stores. You should adopt, don’t shop because you are benefitting yourself and an animal that is I need of protection as well as love.

As for Harmony and her one kitten, Haven, they were saved and fostered by a woman named Ellen. After months of help provided by Ellen, the two went on to be adopted together by a nice family in the local area. Thank you.
