What are the reasons for carrying out community safety?

The LFB has both a statutory and moral obligation to carry our community safety.

What are the interventions used to engage with children and young people?

What is a home fire safety visit?

Engaging with residents and educate them on the hazards and risks which people may encounter in their home, to reduce the likelihood of having a fire.

What is meant by grouped risk visiting?

Priority targeting that occurs in areas where increased prevention activity is necessary.

What is meant by a ‘Quick strike’ or ‘Reassurance visiting

Reactive activity that would maximise the impact of a community safety message immediately following a fire. This activity could include door-to-door reassurance and, where appropriate, full HFSV.

When should a safeguarding referral happen?

A referral should be made when there is concern by any member of LFB staff that either an adult or child is being abused or there is a risk of abuse.

Discriminatory.

When should safeguarding concerns be reported and to whom?

4 hours where there is an immediate risk,


24 hours where for all other concerns.

Contact the police on 999,


Two members of staff to stay with the person and preserve the scene until police arrive,


Complete a LFB safeguarding referral even if partner agency has made a separate referral (police)

What is a serious outstanding risk?

A problem which cannot be resolved through a HFSV but that they do not consider an immediate safeguarding referral. (something out of the ordinary or unexpected, with the potential to cause serious harm to the person)

What are the two categories a SOR can fall?

Outstanding risk,


Welfare referral.

What is outstanding fire risk?

Where a home fire safety visit (HFSV) and installations of a smoke alarm is deemed not sufficient to reduce the risk for an individual.

What are the examples of Outstanding fire risk?

Evidence of burns,


Unreported previous fires,


Burns on carpets or clothes,


Evidence of unsafe candle use,


History of falls.

What is a welfare referral?

Triggers for a welfare referral are issues such as the resident having:


No heating and/or lighting,


No food,


Vermin infestation,


Neglect of property,


Broken windows.

How do you make a welfare referral?

A welfare referral is made by a watch/station manager to local authority housing, social or adult services, to see if the resident is know to them and advise of concerns and action taken. Referrals can be made at any time.
