What investigations should be done in a child with acute abdo pain, and why?

FBC, ESR/CRP - elevation suggests infective (e.g. appendicitis, UTI) or inflammatory (IBD)
Urine dipstick, microscopy and culture (if dipstick +ve for nitrites) - should always rule out UTI X-ray abdo - dilated loops (obstruction), rounded edge against dilated lumen distally (intussusception), faecal loading (constipation) USS abdo - for renal tract, intussusception (donut sign) Barium/air enema - diagnose and treat intussusception |
