What is an enantiomer?
An enantiomer is a molecule that is not superimposable , is said to have "handedness" and has no plane of symmetry. It is not identical to its mirror image.
What are the characteristics of an enantiomer?
1.Not superimposable
2.No plane of symmetry 3.Not identical to its mirror image 4. Four different substituents attached to the central carbon. |
What is an example of an Enantiomer?
Lactic Acid
What is chiral?
Chiral is a term used to describe a molecule that is not identical to it's mirror image.
What is a stereocenter or chirality center?
A carbon that is the cause of chirality in a molecule.
EX: a tetrahedral carbon bonded to four different substituents. |
What are the causes of chirality?
A very common reason for the cause of chirality is a carbon atom that is bonded to four different substituents.
What is achiral?
Achrial is term used to describe a molecule that is identical to its mirror image and has a plane of symmetry.
Ex: Propanic acid |
Optical active
Organic molecules that rotate when light is passed through the plane of symmetry causes the plane of symmetry to rotate. Not all organic molecules have this property.
