When a response in a given situation is followed by a satisfying state of affairs it tends to be repeated. When a response is followed by an annoying state of affairs, it tends not to be repeated.
Law of Effect
Is any response produced by the organism which, in turn, produces consequences in the environment.
Operant Response.
Behaviors that are reflexively elicited by stimuli.
Respondent Behavior.
One that indicates whether a given response will be reinforced or punished.
Discriminative Stimulus.
A reinforcement which increases the probability of the operant's being repeated or a punishment which decreases the probability of the operant.
Stimulus Consequence.
The strength of probability of a response is increased.
Reinforcement.
When an operant is strengthened by the appearance of a stimulus consequence or by an increase in the intensity of a stimulus consequence.
Positive Reinforcement.
The procedure that involves that removal of, or decrease in, the intensity of a stimulus.
Negative Reinforcement.
Any procedure that uses negative reinforcment.
Escape or Avoidance Conditioning.
The strength or probability of a response is decreased.
Punishment.
Involves the appearance or increase in intensity of a stimulus following the operant.
Positive Punishment.
Involves the removal or decrease in intensity of a stimulus.
Negative Punishment.
Food, water, and sex
Primary Operant Conditioning
Praise, smiles, attention
Secondary Reinforcers
Criticism, frowns, and the word "no"
Secondary Punishers
Smiles, praise, pat on the back
Social Reinforcers
Frowns, angry looks, contemptuous tone of voice
Social Punishers.
High probability behavior that will reinforce low probability behavior.
Premack Principle.
