ANC
Absolute Neutrophil Count. A calculated # which reflects a person's functioning infection fighting ability.
((%Seg + %Bands)x WBC)x10
<500 indicates severe infection risk.
ALL
Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. A hematological malignancy marked by the unchecked multiplication of immature lumphoid cells in the bone marrow, blood & body tissues.
AML
Acute Myelongenous Leukemia. A group of hematological malignancies in which neoplastic cells develop from myeloid, monocytic, erythrocytic, or megakaryocytic precursors.
Allogeneic Transplant
When a pt receives stem cells and/or bone marrow from a donor--related or unrelated.
Amyloidosis
A metabolic disorder where organs become clogged/obstructed and consequently compromised due to excesseve amyloid protein deposits.
Apheresis
An outpatient procedure performed over an average of 3-4 hours. It is the process used to collect peripheral stem cells. The person is connected to a machine which pulls out the blood, spins it down to separate and isolate the stem cell layer, and then reinfuses the remaining blood. The remaining stem cell layer is collected and chemically preserved for use in a future stem cell transplant.
Autologous Transplant
When a pt receives his or her own, pre-donated and cryopreserved, stem cells. These cells serve as a hematological "rescue" following high-dose chemotherapy.
Bands
Band neutrophils are the more immature form of a segmented neutrophil. An increase in bands is equivalent to a left shift, meaning that the marrow is releasing immature cells instead of neutrophils. They are different from blasts in that they will continue to mature into a functiong neutrophil.
Blasts
Immature non-functioning white blood cells. If these are seen on a manual differential in large numbers, they can be indicative of disease.
Blood & Marrow Transplant
When a pt receives myeloablative doses of chemo designed to obliterate current functioning bone marrow, and any remaining disease. Following chemotherapy, the pt is "rescued" w/ a source of new stem cells-either allo or auto peripheral stem cells or bone marrow. This new source of stem cells will then grow and replace the old marrow.
Bone Marrow Harvest
An OR procedure, done under general anesthesia. Several dozed bone marrow aspirates are done, via the iliac crests, in order to obtain approx. 1 liter of bone marrow. These cells will thien be used for a bone marrow transplant w/in 24-48 hours or cryopreserved for future use.
