Where does Bhangra originate from and who created it?

From the Punjab region of North India and Pakistan. It was created by punjabi farmers who worked in the land as a way of passing time.


Because of it's farming background, what did it become associated with?

The harvest.

In 1980s when Indians moved to England and brought their music with them. Their music helped them maintain their identity. Their music fused with western pop music to form modern bhangra.

*Bhangra was originally a strong male dance with energetic steps and actions that represented the farmers working in the fields.


*More recently women have started to dance bhangra.


*Bhangra is danced in groups and commonly done in circles.


*Acrobatic stunts are popular.


*However, Bhangra done in clubs is individual and improvised.

The Chaal rhythm played on the dhol drum. 
Dha= both ends played
Na= only the higher end is hit

What is the dhol?

The Dhol is a double-headed, wooden barrelled drum which is head with a strap roung the player's neck. The two drum heads have different tensions and thicknesses, so that one end sounds deeper than the other.
