Nephron

Functional unit of the kidney. It is a microscopic tubule that receives fluid from the blood capillaries in the cortex and converts this to urine, which drains into the ureter

Glomerulus

Fine network of capillaries that increases the local blood pressure to squeeze fluid out of the blood

Bowman's capsule

Cup-shaped capsule which collects the fluid from the blood which has been ultrafiltrated

Ultrafiltration

Filtration at the molecular level in the glomerulus of kidneys. Some molecules are filtered out of the blood into the renal capsule and molecules with relative molecular masses above 69 000 are retained in the blood capillaries

Selective reabsorption

Useful substances are reabsorbed from the nephron into the bloodstream while other excretory substances remain in the nephron

Afferent

Bring blood into the organ

Efferent

Carry blood away from organ
