Metabolism
sum of all chemical and physical processes by which the body breaks down and builds up molecules; require or release energy
Anabolism
process of making new molecules from smaller ones; critical for growth and repair of tissues; requires energy
Catabolism
the breakdown of larger molecules into smaller ones; during digestion, old tissues broken down for repair or replacement; releases energy
Adenosine Triphosphate(ATP)
an organic compound used by cells as a source of energy; energy stored in phosphate bonds; when bonds break, they release energy
What is the molecular currency of cells?
ATP; its stored in every cell> when ATP is needed, cells make it from glucose, fat or amino acids
Metabolic pathways
chemical reactions that occur sequentially to acheive a certain goal; occur in specific parts of cell, may be limited to specific organs
What is the site of energy production of the cell?
mitochondria
Condensation
an anabolic process> water is released as a byproduct
Hydrolysis
usually a catabolic process; large molecule is broken apart with the addition of water
