Comprehensive Health Assessment
Involves a detailed history and physical examination performed at the onset of care in a primary care setting or upon admission to a hospital or a long-term care facility. It includes health problems experienced by the client, as well as health promotion, disease prevention, and assessment for problems associated with known risk factors, or assessment for age/gender specific health problems.
Problem-Based/Focused Assessment
Involves a history and examination that is limited to a specific problem or complaint (sprained ankle). Most commonly used in a walk-in clinic or emergency dept., but is also used in outpatient settings. The potential impact of the client's underlying health status must also be considered during one of these assessments.
Episodic/Follow-up Assessment
Done when a patient is following up with a health care provider for a previously identified problem.

Shift Assessment- another example, which is performed by nurses in acute care facilities. Purpose is to identify changes in condition from baseline.
Screening Assessment
A short, inexpensive examination focused on disease detection. Can be done in a health care providers office or at a health fair. Examples are blood pressure screening, glucose screening, cholesterol, etc.
