What is congenital hip dysplasia?
A malalignment of the femoral head with the acetabulum. The condition develops during the last trimester in utero. (Also known as developmental dysplasia)
What is Legg-Calve-Perthes disease?
Characterized by degeneration of the femoral head due a disturbance in the blood supply (avascular necrosis).
What is osteogenesis imperfecta?
A connective tissue disorder that affects the formation of collagen during bone development.
What is scoliosis? What are some treatments for scoliosis?
A lateral curvature of the spine that can be classified as infantile, juvenile, adolescent or adult.
Treatment for scoliosis:
< 25 - require monitoring
25-40 - orthotic management and PT intervention (posture, flexibility, respiratory function, and body mechanics
> 40 - surgical intervention
What are some examples of non-opioid drugs for pain/musculoskeletal system management? Side-effects?
Acetylsalicylic acid - aspirin (Bayer, Ascriptin), Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Panadol)
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories - Diclofenac (Voltaren), Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), Indomethacin (Indocin), Ketorolac (Toradil), Naproxen sodium (Aleve), Celecoxib (Celebrex).
Side-effects include GI distress with long-term use.
What are some examples of opioid drugs for pain/musculoskeletal system management?
Morphine (MS Contin), Hydromorphone (Dilaudid), Meperidine (Demerol), Codeine (Codeine), Oxycodone (Oxycontin), Naloxone (Narcan), Propoxyphene (Darvon), Fentanyl (Sublimaze).
Side-effects include mood swings, sedation, confusion, and physical dependence.
What are some examples of glucocorticoid drugs for pain/musculoskeletal system management?
Cortisol (Hydrocortone), Prednisone (Deltasone, Prednisone), Dexamethasone (Decadron), Prednisolone (Prelone, Pediapred), Methylprednisolone (Medrol).
Side-effects include muscle atrophy, GI distress, and glaucoma.
