Alzheimer's Disease

-progressive neurodegenerative disorder

-results in deterioration and irreversible damage w/in the cerebral cortex and subcortical areas of the brain

-neurons involved with ACh transmission deteriorate w/in cerebral cortex

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

-chronic degenerative disease that produces both UMN/LMN impairments

-weakness and muscle atrophy secondary to significant loss of anterior horn cells in the spinal cord and the motor cranial nerve nuclei in the lower brainstem

Bell's Palsy

-temporary unilateral facial paralysis secondary to trauma w/ demyelination and/or axonal degeneration of the facial nerve

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

-peripheral nerve entrapment injury that occurs as a result of compression of the median nerve

Diabetic Neuropathy

-complication and direct effect of diabetes mellitus

-many forms: cranial neuropathies, radiculopathies, and mononeuropathies

Epilepsy

-chronic condition where there is temporary dysfunction of the brain that results in hypersynchronous electrical discharge of cortical neurons and seizure activity that is typically unprovoked and unpredictable

Guillan-Barre Syndrome

-aka acute polyneuropathy

-temporary inflammation and demyelination of the peripheral nerves' myelin sheaths potentially resulting in axonal degeneration`

Huntington's Disease

-neurologic disorder of the CNS

-characterized by degeneration and atrophy of the BG and cerebral cortex w/in the brain

-NT's become deficient and are unable to modulate movement

Multiple Sclerosis

-produces patches of demyelination of the myelin sheaths that surround nerves w/in the brain and SC

-subsequent plaque development and eventual failure of impulse transmission

Myasthenia Gravis

-autoimmune disease resulting in NMJ pathology

-defect in transmission of nerve impulses to muscles at the NMJ

Parkinson's Disease

-primary degenerative disorder

-characterized by a decrease in production of dopamine w/in the corpus striatum of the BG

Post-polio Syndrome

-LMN that affects the anterior horn cells of those previously affected w/ polio
