What are the medial relations of thalamus?
Third ventricle
Which structure lies lateral to thalamus?
Posterior limb of the internal capsule
Which ventricle lies superior to the thalamus?
Lateral ventricle
Between what structures you find the choroid fissure?
Chorid fissure lies between the superior surface of thalamus and fornix
What lies anterior to the thalamus?
Interventricular foramen
What happens if there is a tumor at the anterior end of thalamus?
Memory is fucked up
What is the name of the posterior expanded part of thalamus?
Pulvinar
What is the shape of internal medullary lamina?
Y shaped
What are the three basic groups of nuclei of thalamus divided by the internal medullary lamina?
1) Anterior group 2) Medial group 3) Lateral group
Where is reticular nucleus situated?
Reticular nucleus of thalamus lies between the posterior limb of the internal capsule and EML
What are the nuclei of lateral region of thalamus?
Ventral anterior Lateral dorsal
Ventral intermediate (ventral lateral) Lateral posterior
Ventral posterior: Ventral posterolateral Pulvinar
Ventral posteromedial
What is Papez circuit and give its connections?
One of the pathways of limbic system. Important in the control of memory and emotion.
Subiculum of hippocampusfornixmamillary nuclei of mamillary bodyanterior thalamic nucleuscingulate gyruscingulumparahippocampal gyrusentorhinal cortex hippocampus
What is Wernicke Korsakoff’s syndrome?
Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is caused by thiamine deficiency seen most often in alcoholics. These patients have bilateral necrosis of mamillary bodies. Patients who survive the acute stages of this syndrome present with anterograde and retrograde amnesia. They also present other neuropsychological deficits which suggest frontal lobe dysfunction
What is the commencement and termination of fornix?
This is a “C”shaped white matter structure of the limbic lobe
It connects the hippocampus to the mamillary body. And ends in the nucleus accumbens and septal nuclei.
VA nucleus of thalamus is connected to what?
Globus pallidusventral anterior nucleus of thalamusMotor cortex
VL nucleus of thalamus is connected to what?
Also called intermediate nucleus. Dentate nucleus of cerebellumventral intermediate nucleusmotor cortex
VPL nucleus receives which tracts and where does it project?
Connections: Medial lemniscus+spinal lemniscusventral posterolateral nucleus of thalamussensory cortex
VPM nucleus receives sensations from which part of the body?
VPM nucleus receives sensations from which part of the body?
all conscious sensations from spinal cord come here
Connections: Trigeminal lemniscus (pain and temperature from the face) and tasteventral postero medial nucleus of thalamussensory cortex
Name all the nuclei of ventral tier of lateral group nuclei of thalamus?
VA, VPM, VPL, VL
What transmitter is released by the reticular cells?
Gaba
Where are reticular cells located?
Thalamus
What types of channels are responsible for the burst potential?
Special voltage gated sodium channels (T-Type)
Which channels are implicated in the absence seizures?
(T-Type)
What is the very important sign of paramedian thalamic infarction?
Coma and then severe memory dysfunction
