Factors which influence choice of network

1.Cost of network- Initial purchasing of equipment

-Installation and training

-Maintenance/ Personnel costs

2.Size of organisation- Needs can range from a small LAN to a global WAN

-Some communications media are limited by the distance they have to travel

3.How the system will be used- What type of applications do users require?

- Will they need large data storage?

4. Existing systems to integrate- Any network must fit in with the existing operating systems and protocols

-It must support any peripherals already in use e.g. bar code readers, printers ,etc.

Client vs Peer to Peer

What is a network topology?
Physical configuration of layout of network and how it is linked/connected together
Star topology

Advantages:

-Fault tolerant, if one cable fails then the other computers can still be used.

-Easy to add extra computers- extra computers can be added without disturbing the network

-Different speeds are possible on different spokes/arms of the network

Disadvantages:

-Higher cost, the larger amount of cabling needed makes it more expensive

-Dependence on the central server/hub

Ring topology

Advantages:

-Each computer has the same access as the others so no one computer can hog the network

-Higher transmission speeds, data flows in on direction only (so large volumes can be transmitted)

-No collisions

Disadvantages:

-Faults are difficult to locate

-Break in the cable and the network won't work

Advantages & Disadvantages of WiFi

Advantages:

-Allows inexpensive LANs to be set up without cables

-Allows people the freedom of working anywhere a signal can be received

-Ideal for networks in old listed buildings where cables would not be allowed to be installed

-Global set of standards. you can use WiFi all over the world

Disadvantages:

-There may be security problems even when encryption is used

-Transmission speed slower than cable

-There may be health problems in using WiFi

Remote management

-Send instant messages

-Clear printer queues (at stations)

-Shut down stations

-Log off users who have forgotten to do so

-Check to see right number of licences

-Setting regular times for virus scanning/ checking virus scanning has been done

User accounts & logs

-Allows the manager or system to manage accounts by ALLOCATING of access levels to users

-Auditing is used to identify abuses of the system by authorised staff

-Auditing investigates instances of unauthorised access (i.e. by hackers)
