CNS
Organs
Brain and Spinal Cord
PNS
Organs
the nerves
CNS
Function
Sensory receptors are in organs and tissues; responds to external stimuli
Processes incoming information
PNS
Function
Nerve impulses are sent to the muscles and glands
Resting Potential
Resting Potential axon is at rest; not conducting the nerve impulse. More NA+ outside the axon and more k+ inside the axon.
Action Potential
Action Potential- A change in polarity across the axonal memebrane as a nerve impulse occurs: When NA+ gates open, NA+ moves to the inside of the axon and a depolarization occurs. When K+ gates open and K+ moves to outside the axon, a repolarization occurs.
3 Parts of a neuron
cell body, dendrites, axons; long axons are covered by the mylin sheath
Ion concentration
dependant on sodium-potassium pump; NA+ ions in and K+ ions out
Memembrane potential
permeable to K+ not NA+ so always more ions outside
Synapse
When a neurotransmitter is released into a synaptic cleft, transmission of a nerve impulse occurs
