• safe plant and systems of work


• safe use, handling, transport and storage of substances and articles.


• provision of information, instruction, training and supervision.


• safe place of work, access and egress.


• safe working environment with adequate welfare facilities.


• a written safety policy together with organisational and other arrangements [5 or more people, must be written down].


• consultation with safety representatives and formation of safety committes where there are recognised trade union's.

Section 3 of the health and safety at work act 1974 says

Duties of employers to others affected by their undertaking.


The employer has a duty to safe guard those not in their employment but affected by the undertaking. Does include members of the public.

Health and safety at work act 1974 section 4 is

Duties of landlords, owner's and those in control of premises



This includes a duty to ensure that there is suitable and sufficient access and egress for those using the premises. This includes any items of plant etc.
