Adnexa Oculi

Special structures that surround the eyeball and aid in it's function

Lashes

Special modified cilia that are located on the lid margin and are especially sensitive to touch.


Acts as a warning when something approaches the eye and causes the lid to close.

Common Lash Problems

Blepharitis - an inflammation of the lid margins that presents itself in dandruff like flakes, itching, swelling, and redness. Chronic condition Contraindication for contacts.



Trichiasis- inward turning of the eyelash. May be helped with bandage contact.

Eyelids aka Palpebrae

Help control the amount of light that enters the eye, distributes tears across the ocular surface, provide protection.

Layers of the Eyelid

First layer is the skin


Second layer is the orbicularis oculi (muscle that is responsible for lid closure)


Third layer is the most dense. It consists of the orbital septum, muscles, and tarsal plate


Fourth layer is the palpebrae conjunctiva.

Levator palpebrae superioris (upper lid raiser)


Contractor muscle in the lower lid


Muscle of Muller that helps the lid maintain shape.

Tarsal plate

Runs the length of the lid. Provides lid structure, houses the meibominan gland

Palpebrae Conjunctiva

Clear mucous membrane that covers the entire inner layers of the lid and the upper portion of the sclera

Palpebrae fissure

The opening between the lids. Average size 10mm wide and 30mm long.
