Intrinsic muscles innervated by the Median N. (List 4)

LOAF:

Lumbricals (radial side)

Opponens pollicis

Abductor pollicis brevis (APB)

Flexor pollicis brevis (FPB) (superficial head)

Abductor pollicis brevis

(Intrinsic muscle innervated by the Median N.)

ORIGIN: scaphoid, trapezium, flexor retinaculum, and tendon of APL - abductor pollicis longus

INSERTION: base of proximal phalanx, radial side of thumb

FUNCTION: palmar abduction

Opponens pollicis - OIF

(Intrinsic muscle innervated by the Median N.)

ORIGIN: trapezium and flexor retinaculum

INSERTION: first metacarpal

FUNCTION: opposition

Flexor pollicis brevis (FPB): Superficial head - OIF(Intrinsic muscle innervated by the Median N.)

ORIGIN: trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, and flexor retinaculum

INSERTION: base of proximal phalanx, radial side of thumb

FUNCTION: thumb MCP flexion, (deep head innervated by ulnar nerve)

Lumbricals (radial/lateral side)

(Intrinsic muscle innervated by the Median N.)

ORIGIN: tendons of flexor digitorum profundus, index and middle fingers (radial and palmar sides)

INSERTION: radial side of digits II and III into extensor expansion

FUNCTION: MCP flexion and extension of IP joints

Intrinsic muscles innervated by the ulnar nerve (List 7)

Abductor digiti minimi (ADM)

Opponens digiti minimi (ODM)

Flexor digiti minimi (FDM)

Adductor

Lumbricals (ulnar side)

Palmar interossei (PI)

Dorsal interossei (DI)

Abductor digiti minimi (ADM)

Intrinsic muscle innervated by the ulnar nerve

ORIGIN: pisiform and tendon of flexor carpi ulnaris

INSERTION: proximal phalanx of the 5th digitFUNCTION: abduction of the 5th digit

Opponens digiti minimi (ADM)

Intrinsic muscle innervated by the ulnar nerve

ORIGIN: hook of hamate and flexor retinaculumINSERTION: 5th metacarpal

FUNCTION: opposition of the 5th digit

Flexor digiti minimi (FDM)

Intrinsic muscle innervated by the ulnar nerve

ORIGIN: hook of hamate and flexor retinaculumINSERTION: proximal phalanx of 6th digit

FUNCTION: flexion of MCP joint and opposition of the 5th digit

Adductor

Intrinsic muscle innervated by the ulnar nerve

ORIGIN: (oblique head) - base of the 2nd and 3rd metacarpal, trapezoid and capitate. (Transverse head) - palmar border and shaft of 3rd metacarpal

INSERTION: sesamoid, base of proximal phalanx, tendon of extensor pollicis longus

FUNCTION: adducts CMC joint of thumb

Lumbricals (ulnar side)Intrinsic muscle innervated by the ulnar nerve

ORIGIN: tendons of flexor digitorum profundus for digits IV and V

INSERTION: radial side of digits IV and V into extensor expansion

FUNCTION: MCP flexion and extension of IP joints of digits I and V

Palmar InterosseiIntrinsic muscle innervated by the ulnar nerve

ORIGIN: (1st palmar) - ulnar surfact of 2nd metacarpal; (2nd palmar) - radial surfact of 4th metacarpal;(3rd palmar) - radial surfact of 5th metacarpal

INSERTION: (1st palmar) - ulnar surfact of 2nd proximal phalanx (2nd palmar) - radial surface of 4th proximal phalanx

(3rd palmar) - radial surface of 5th proximal phalanx

FUNCTION: adduction and assistance with MCP flexion and extension of IP joints of digits II thru V

Dorsal Interossei

Intrinsic muscle innervated by the ulnar nerve

ORIGIN: all four muscles aarise from the adjacent sides of the metacarpals

INSERTION: proximal phalanx on the radia aspect of the index, radial and ulnar sides of middle finger, and ulnar side of ring finger (all into extensor digitorum)

FUNCTION: abduction and assists with MCP flexion & ext. of IP joints of digits II through V
