CAD

atherosclerosis disease process that narrows the lumen of coronary arteries resulting in ischemia to the myocardium

Atherosclerosis Etiology

disease of lipid-laden plaques (lesions) affecting moderate and large size arteries

Modifiable Risk Factors

smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, emotional stress

Contributory Risk Factors

diabetes, obesity, elevated blood levels

Angina Pectoris

mild to moderate chest pain

Stable Angina

classic angina occurs during exercise, relieved with rest

Unstable Angina

angina at rest, difficult to control pain

Variant Angina

chest pain due to coronary artery spasm

Myocardial Infarction (MI)

prolonged ischemia (inadequate blood supply), results in necrosis (death of) heart tissue

Signs of MI

pain (neck, jaw, arm)


dyspnea (labored breathing)


indigestion

Heart Failure

heart is unable to maintain adequate circulation of blood to meet metabolic body needs

HF Etiology

may be caused by CAD, congenital heart disease, hypertension (high BP), infections

Left Sided Heart Failure (Congestive Heart Failure) (CHF)

blood is not adequately pumped into systemic circulation in LA and LV

Right Heart Failure

blood is not adequately returned from the systemic circulation to the heart

Biventricular Failure

severe LV pathology producing backup into the lungs, PA pressure, and RV signs of heart failure
