Nazi

An abbreviation of the National Socialist Workers Part. This was a fascist political party that took control of Germany in 1933.

Nationalism; Nationalist

The idea of feeling pride in one's own nation and thinking other nations are inferior.

Jew; Jewish

A Jewish person (Jew) is someone whose parents or ancestors are Jewish or who practises the religion of Judaism, or both.

Judaism

Judaism is the religion practised by Jewish people. a person can be "Jewish" without practising Judaism.

Racism against Jews.

Prejudice

Forming a negative opinion about someone or something without knowing the facts about them or it.

The name of the system of government in Germany after the First World War and before the Nazi dictatorship began.

Treaty of Versailles

An agreement (Treaty) between the countries who had fought in the First World War. The agreement was made at Versailles, a city in France.

Reparations

The payments that the losing side had to pay to the winning side to repair the damage at the end of a war.

Resentment

The bitter, angry feeling that one has been wrongly or unfairly treated.

Humiliation

The embarrassed or shameful feeling when one has been disgraced in front of others.

SA or Stormtroopers

The Nazi party's own army.

SS or Gestapo

The Nazi police force and Hitler's body guards.

Inflation

The process of prices increasing over time.

Hyperinflation

The process of prices increasing so rapidly that wages cannot keep up, resulting in the value of money also decreasing quickly.

Chancellor

The head of state (leader) of the Weimar Republic.

Führer

The new head of state invented by Hitler to replace the Chancellor and the President.

Propaganda

Biased (one-sided) or misleading (untruthful) information or messages.

An organised public event where many people come to listen to a speaker.

Swastika

The English name for the Nazi symbol that looks like a hooked cross or a cross with ends at right angles. In German it was called the Hakenkreuz - hooked cross.
