What is the muscular system
Dense fibers and three kinds of muscles: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac
What are the three types of muscles in the muscular system and what do they do?
The skeletal muscles control voluntary acts such as chewing, jumping and turning the head. The smooth muscles control involuntary activities and are found in the blood vessels and urinary track. Cardiac muscles are highly specialized and found only in the heart.
What is the endocrine system?
A complex system that produces and distributes hormones through the bloodstream. The system consists of glands that secrete hormones and other substances.
What is the pituitary gland?
It is located near the brain an is the primary gland in the body. Hormones from this gland control the operation of other endocrine glands, sex glands, milk production and pigmentation.
What are the adrenal glands?
They are found near the kidney. Hormones from these glands affect heart rate, blood pressure, blood vessels, and blood sugar.
What is the thyroid?
It is found in the neck. It regulates mental and physical alertness. The parathyroid glands are found near or inside the thyroid and regulate calcium to the blood.
The immune system
resists the spread of disease by destroying disease causing agents (antigens). This system is very complicated and not fully understood.
The lymphatic system
part of the immune system which produces bean sized lymph glands located throughout the body. These glands attack antigens directly.
Granulocytes
a part of the immune system that ingests antigens and more importantly alter antigens in a way that makes it easier for lymphocytes to destroy them.
Immunoglobins
Antibodies that combine with antigens to disable them. There are thousands of antibodies, each targeted for a specific antigen.
