In the early 1800's--especially after gold was discovered in Georgia in 1828--the U.S. government began demanding that all Indians in the Southeast be relocated west of the Mississippi River.

In 1835, some Cherokees signed a treaty and moved on their own.

Most, however, were forced to march the Trail of Tears.

About 1,000 Cherokees hid out in the Great Smoky Mountains.

In time, they were allowed to stay, and they became known as the Eastern Band of Cherokees.
