What is an indicator species?

A species who's presence, absence or abundance tells you about environment quality

What is mark and recapture sampling?

Capturing a sample of a population, marking them and then releasing them again. After an interval a second sample is taken

What is the Mark and Recapture sampling equation?

N=MC/R

Where:

N is population

M is number captured and marked (1st sample)

C is number captured on second sample

R is number recaptured

What are 4 assumptions that are made about mark and recapture sampling?

1. The population is evenly distributed

2. Each individual in the population has an equal chance of being sampled

3. The population remains constant

4. Marking has no survival effect on the individual marked

Name and describe some different methods of marking

Banding- Metal bands are attached to the limb of an organism

Tagging- allow for the remote tracking of organsims

Surgical Implantation- Animal undergoes surgical procedure to have tags implemented

Painting- Non-toxic, bio degradable paint is applied to an organism

Hair Clipping- A clearly identifiable section of hair is cut off

What is an Ethogram?
A detailed list of all the behaviours in a particular species with a clear description of each ebhaviour
What is anthropomorphism?
Attributing human attributes and characteristics to a non-human species
Which measurements are used to quantify animal behaviour?
Latency; time between stimulus and response, Frequency; the number of times a particular behaviour occurs, Duration; the length of time a particular behaviour lasts, Intensity; a measure of the magnitude or energy content of a particular behaviour
