Nucleic Acids

found in the nucleous contain DNA/RNA

Nucleotide Vs. Nucleoside Monomers

Nucleotide (Monomer)

  • Sugar: 2' deoxyribose (ribose w/o 2' OH)
  • Aromatic Base (purine or pyrimidine) on 1' carbon
  • Phosphate Groups: 1-3 (3= 2-deoxynucleosidetriphosphate) dNTP

Nucleoside (Monomer)

  • Sugar: Ribose with a 2' OH group
  • Base: attached to 1' carbon

Formation of a Phosphodiester bond and direction

Removal of 2 phosphate group on the 5' carbon provides energy for the last phosphate to bond with the 3' hydroxyl of the next nucleotide

Direction: addition of new nucleotides are always added in the 5' --> 3' direction

Antiparallel and Parrallel Strands

Antiparrallel Strand runs in the opposite direction, allows for complimentary base pairing.

Antiparrallel Strand runs in the opposite direction, allows for complimentary base pairing.
