National fire alarm code (NFPA 72)

The recommended requirements for installation of fire alarm systems and equipment in residential and commercial facilities

Life safety code (NFPA 101)

This document is focused on preservation and protection of human life, as opposed to property

Addressable systems

Use advance technology and detection equipment for discrete identification of alarm signals at the detector level

Most analog addressable systems

Operate on a two conductor circuit

Addressable or analog addressable systems

Two basic wiring or circuit types (classes) Class B is the most common and has six different styles

Main components of fire alarm system

Control panels

Line detectors

Detection is continuous along the entire length of the detector in these detection devices

Fixed temperature heating devices

Activate when the temperature exceeds a preset level

Light scattering detectors

use the reflective properties of the smoke to detect the smoke

The light scattering principle is used for the most common single housing detectors

Light scattering detectors

are usually spot detectors that contain a light source and photosensitive device arranged so that the Rays do not normally fall on the device

Double-action pull stations

Require the user to lift a cover or open a door before operating the pool station

Positive alarm sequence

Alarm delay is usually adjustable for a period up to three minutes, but must not exceed 3 minutes

Defined by NFPA 72

Standby time for operation of system on secondary power must be no less than 24 hours for Central, local, proprietary, voice Communications, and household systems and no less than 60 hours for auxiliary and remote systems

Residential alarm sounding devices

Must have a minimum dB rating of 85dBA at 10 feet

RJ31-X

A special connecting device that connects digital communicators to standard, voice grade telephone line

* the RJ31-X is a modular telephone jack into which a chord from the digital Communicator is plugged

*it also separates the telephone companies equipment from the fire alarm system equipment and is approved by Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

Fire alarm circuits extended Beyond one building

Are governed by the NEC

NEC article 760

Covers circuit wiring that is both powered and controlled by the fire alarm system

Manual pull stations

Require no more than 5ft pounds of force to operate a manual Pull Station

Smoke barrier

a doorway that extends more than 4", but less than 18", must be considered a smoke barrier, and a spacing of detectors must be reduced to 2/3 of the detectors list is spacing distance on either side of the opening

Temperatures

temperatures below 32°F can cause false alarms and temperatures above 120°F can prevent proper smoke detector operation

0°C and 48.8°C
