Chloramphenicol

Ricketts, chlamydial diseases. Not used very much because of serious toxic reaction. Drug of choice for typhoid fever

Adverse reactions

Bone marrow injury, blood cell formation disturbances. Neonates - gray baby syndrome. Liver pregnant. Inhibits metabolism of dicoumarol, tolbutamida

Clindamycin

Cleocin

lincomycin also in this category. Bacteriostatic, IV

Used for

Infections caused by staphylococcus aureus, GI infections. Best drug for acne

Adverse reactions

Lincomycin has marked toxicity and only used when all else fails. For joint, bone, abdominal and female genitourinary tract infections

Adverse reactions continued

Abdominal pain. May result in pseudomembranous colitis

Contraindications

Previous sensitivity to the drug. Babies, moms, people with impaired kidney function, history of GI (particularly colitis infection), liver disease, asthma

Spectinomycin

Bacteriostatic

Used for

Uncomplicated gonorrhea in patients sensitized or resistant to penicillin

Adverse reactions

Headache, dizziness, chills, fever, insomnia. Also pain and soreness at the injection site

Contraindications

Just hypersensitivity to spectinomycin. May be necessary to treat sex partner to prevent reinfection

Vancomycin

Vancocin

Bactericidal. Requires monitoring of patient

Adverse reactions

Ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. chills, fever, nausea, rashes and red man syndrome (Flushing)

Contraindications

Patients with previous hearing loss, kids, moms, old people. Impaired kidney function and renal failure

Call doctor if you have ringing in your ears

Linezolid - an oxazolidinone

Zyvox

Bacteriostatic

Used for

Totally synthetic antibiotic. GP aerobics organisms, staph, strep and enterococci that are highly virulent

Adverse reactions

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

Contraindications

Dopamine, epinephrine or pseudoephedrine. Blood pressure and heart rate should be monitored. Some foods and beverages high in tyramine -- aged cheese, air dried Meats, chocolate, fish, sauerkraut, red wines, tap beers and soy sauce
