To what virus family does hepatitis A virus belong?

Picornavirus. (Smallest(27-nm diameter) nonenveloped icosahedral single stranded positive sense RNA virus.

How many immunological strains of HAV are there?
|
Although HAV genome may vary by 20%, there is only one serotype. Infection confers immunity from all HAV strains. Transmitted by fecal-oral route.

HAV is almost universal in developing nations and in about 1/3 of adults in the US, have evidence of past infection.

No. HAV usually cause a self limiting acute reaction with complete recovery.

Active HAV infection is characterized by anti-HAV IgM and elevated serum aminotransferases. Chronic HAV infection is characterized by anti-HAV IgG.
