Dermatophytes

Fungus that affects keratinized areas (nails, hair, skin) Known as ringworm. Found in soil and is zoonotic.

Wood's Lamp

This is a tool used to diagnosis dermatophytes (ringworm). It is an apple green color with only 50% fluoresce. Need to allow for this tool to warm up for 15 minutes prior to usage.

Dermatophyte Test Media (culture)

Clean area to be tested with alcohol to remove contaminants, then pluck a few hairs from active area of lesion or scrape a few skin cells and inoculate media. Check every few days for 10 - 14 days. Positive will turn media red and growth with buff color or off white.

Aspergillus

Worldwide distribution. Transmitted by inhalation. Disease is called aspergillosis; respiratory, gutteral pouch, mycotic keratitis, mycotic abortion.

Zygomycetes

Environmental contaminants (bread mold, Fruit mold)

Candida

Oval shaped and budding on Gram stain. Found in mucous membranes (GI tract, oral cavity, external genitalia, skin) Predisposed by alteration in normal flora.

Cryptococcus

Found in soil and pigeon droppings. Transmitted by inhalation and wound contamination. Diagnosis by India Ink staining - budding yeast with large capsule.

Malassezia

Peanut shaped yeast. Found in the external ear and is seen as an emerging cause of seborrheic dermatitis and hypersensitivity reactions. Diagnosis - Gram stain - oval, bottle-shaped, budding yeast.

Coccidiodes

Found in Southwest USA. Transmitted by inhalation. Diagnosis - Direct exam - yeast or serology.

Blastomyces

Found in Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio river Valleys. Transmitted by inhalation. Blastomycosis = poor condition, fistulous tract in skin, granulomatous lesions in lungs, and swollen joints. Diagnosis - direct exam, serology, radiography, and culture.

Histoplasma

Found in Mississippi and Ohio river valleys. Found in bat and bird feces. Transmitted by inhalation. Diagnosis = direct exam, radiography, serology, and culture.

Sporothrix

Found in midwest, spores enter puncture wounds. Diagnosis = tissue biopsy.
