What does BLSA stand for on a TAF/METAR?

Blowing Sand

What does DRSA stand for on a TAF/METAR?

Drifting Sand

What is the difference between DRSA & BLSA?

Drifting sand used when the sand particles remain below a height of 8ft or 2m. And Blowing is used when sand particles reach a Height of 8ft/2m and up.

Height defined not volume.

What is Fog?

Fog is a suspention of water droplets due to a light wind.

What are the types of Fog formations?

- Radiation Fog

- Advection Fog

- Mist

What is Radiation Fog?

Radiation fog is fog formed due to the cooling of the earth that releases heat into the surrounding air that is humid. The clouds at night help produce the blanket effect that keeps radiation within the atmosphere.

A light wind of 5kts to 10kts produces dense fog and 5kts or less produces shallow fog.

The fog dissipates with winds greater than 10kts and with the solar heating.

What is advection fog?

This is fogged formed when a warm humid mass of air moves over a cooler surface. Winds of up to 15kts can produce dense fog through advection. The fog produce through advection can be lifted to form low startus, or remain over water and move over land in the day.

What is the designator for Fog and Mist on TAFS/METARS?

Fog is FG. Mist is BR.

What is the difference between BR and FG?

Fog is when you can see less than 1km and mist is when you can see further than 1km

Visibility and not volume

What is the definition of cloud ceiling?

The height of the base of the lowest layer of cloud below 20 000 ft, covering more than half the sky.

What does CAVOK stand for?

Ceiling and Visibility OK.

What is the definition of CAVOK?

- Vis >10kms

- No Cloud below 5000ft or MSA, whichever is higher.

- No Cb or Overdevelopment.

- No Sig Wx.

4 Considerations.

What does BR stand for on a TAF/METAR?

Mist
