What is specific latent heat?

The energy needed to change state without the temperature changing

How do you calculate specific latent heat?

SLH = energy divided by the mass

Why does the temperature of a substance not change when it is melting or boiling?

Because the energy is used to break the intermolecular bonds, rather than raising the temperature

Why doesn't the temperature of a substance change when it is condensing or freezing?

Because bonds are forming between particles, which releases energy and so the temperature doesn't go down until the substance has completely changed state
