The idea that identity is performatively constructed by the very ‘expressions’ that add said to be its results (it’s manufactured through a set of acts). Also the idea that there is no gender indemnity behind the expressions of gender, and that performativity is not a singular act. Basically, gender is a social construct ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ are created through repetition. |

The idea that the media provide us with ‘tools’ or resources that we use to construct our identities. We can pick n mix our identities through other characters and we now have more of a variety of representations to create our identities with. |

The idea that colonial discourses continue to inform contemporary attitudes to race and ethnicity in the post-colonial era. Also the idea that civilisationism constructs racial hierarchies and sets up binary oppositions based on notions of otherness. Basically, even though we no longer have colonies, the representations of these groups is still affected by that time. |

The idea that representation is the production of meaning through language with language defined in its broadest sense as a system with signs. The idea that the relationship between concepts and signs are governed by codes. Basically, media language is used to create representations. |

The idea that feminism is a struggle to end sexist patriarchal oppression and the ideology of domination. Also the idea that feminism is a political commitment rather than a lifestyle choice. |

The idea that gender is constructed through discourse (text) and that it’s meaning varies according to cultural and historical context. Also the idea that the display of women’s bodies as objects to be looked at is a core element of western patriarchal culture. Basically, men and women are represented differently in the media, women are objectified as a result of western culture. |
