Explain agonists
A type of ligand that binds to a receptor to give the same therapeutic effect (as the drug)
Explain antagonists
Binds to a receptor but it doesnt activate the receptor

Three types: competitive, noncompetitive, partial
What are competeitve antagonists?
Antagonists that bind to the receptor and compete with the agonist for the same space
What are noncompetitive antagonists?
Ligands that dont compete for the same space or bind to the active site...they may just bind somewhere else to change the shape of the receptor (ultimately preventing the agonist from binding to the receptor b/c it doesnt fit)
What are partial agonists?
Ligands that can bind to receptors but do not give the maximal effect.
