Ionisation
1st stage in mass spectrometry. Atom is ionised by knocking one or more electrons off atom to create a positive ion.
Acceleration
2nd stage in mass spectrometry. Ions are accelerated so they all have the same kinetic energy.
Deflection
3rd stage in mass spectrometry. Ions defected by magnetic field. The lighter the atom, the more deflection and vice versa. The higher the charge, the higher deflection and vice versa.
Detection
Beam of ions detected electrically.
