Rocky Intertidal Communities [3]

- feeding

- most sessile organisms filter feed

- many mobile organisms are grazers (crabs, limpets, etc) (they scrape algae, bacteria off rocks)

- others are detritivores (an organism that that feeds on dead and decomposing organic matter)

- can't feed when emersed, so organisms higher in the intertidal zone grow more slowly

- more higher = grow more slowly

Wave Energy

- wave action varies

- most waves approach shore at an angle but are refracted; end up parallel to shore

Adaptations to Wave Energy

- avoid it

- seaweeds use holdfasts

- barnacles glue themselves down

- suction cups on chitons and limpets

Adaptations to Wave Shock

- gobies are fishes with modified pelvic fins that act as suction cups

- most intertidal fishes lack swim bladders so they sink

- some animals have thicker shells

- some animals are more flexible
