1. Stress

(stres)
Definition- Mental and physical response of our bodies to the changes and challenges of our lives.

Example- I have had alot of stress in my life since the I have began helping take care of my cousins children.
2. Stressor

(stres-or)
Definition- A physical, social, or psychological event or condition that causes the body to adjust to a specific situation.

Example- A large stressor in my life was the decision to return to college.
3. Adjustment

(ad-just-ment)
Definition- The attempt to cope with a given situation.

Example- College took quite an adjustment for me but after a few weeks I developed a routine.
4. Strain

(strain)
Definition- The wear and tear the body and mind sustain in adjusting to or resisting a stressor.

Example- Within my life there has be allot of strain on my body due to my love of baseball.
5. Eustress

(eu-stress)
Definition- Positive stress that presents opportunities for personal growth.

Example- I had an eustress stress when I went to CNM for the first time.
6. Distress

(dis-tress)
Definition- Negative stress that can have a negative effect on health.

Example- The distress I have been experiencing at home is having an effect on my health.
7. Fight-or-flight response

(fight-r-flight-re-sponse)
Definition- Physiological reaction in which the body prepares to combat or escape a real or perceived threat.

Example- My mothers cat believes that children are a threat to her and responds by fight-or-flight.
8. Homeostasis

(ho-me-o-sta-sis)
Definition- A balanced physical state in which all the body's system function smoothly.

Example- While at home in my room I experience homeostasis and function to my full extent.
9. Adaptive response

(a-dapt-ive-re-sponse)
Definition- Form of adjustment in which the body attempts to restore homeostasis.

Example- When I am stressed or experiencing a crisis' and I am trying to calm down my body is having an adaptive response.
10. General adaptation syndrome (GAS)

(gen-er-al-ad-ap-ta-tion-syn-drome)
Definition- The pattern followed in the physiological response to stress, consisting of the alarm, resistance, and exhaustion phases.

Example- When my body is experiencing the different steps of "stress' fight-or-flight' overload" (GAS) is the fight within my body internally to restore the total balance also known as homeostasis.
11. Autonomic nervous system (ANS)

(aw-tuh-nom-ik-nur-vuhs-sis-tuhm)
Definition- The portion of the central nervous system that regulates bodily functions that a person does not normally consciously control.

Example- My friend injured his autonomic nervous system causing him to not be able to control his walking in a car accident.
12. Sympathetic nervous system

(sym-pa-thet-ic--nur-vuhs-sis-tuhm)
Definition- Branch of the autonomic nervous system responsible for stress arousal.

Example- My sympathetic nervous system be came aroused when I realized finals are next week.
13. Parasympathetic nervous system

(par-uh-sim-puh-thet-ik-nur-vuhs-sis-tuhm)
Definition- Part of the autonomic nervous system responsible for slowing systems stimulated by the stress response.

Example- I wish my parasympathetic nervous system would slow my stress response even further during finals week.
14. Hypothalamus

(hy-po-thal-a-mus)
Definition- A section of the brain that controls the sympathetic nervous system and directs the response.

Example- Someone who can't be sympathetic to others may be concerned they do not have a hypothalamus.
15. Epinephrine

(ep-i-neph-rine)
Definition- Also called adrenaline, a hormone that stimulates body systems in response to stress.

Example- During my baseball game the epinephrine released acts like fuel giving me the energy to play the entire game to the best of my ability.
16. Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)
Definition- A pituitary hormone that stimulates the adrenal glands to secrete cortisol.

Example-

Definition- Hormone released by the adrenal glands that makes stored nutrients more readily available to meet energy demands.

Example- Playing baseball I defiantly needed allot of cortisol available to meet my energy needs.
18. Immunocompetence

(im-mu-no-com-pe-tentence)
Definition- The ability of the immune system to respond to assaults.

Example- Immunocompetence causes a greater chance of minor illness and greater risk of a life-threatening disease.
19. Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI)
Definition- Science of the interaction between the mind's response to stress and the immune system.

Example- I hope the stress I am experiencing this week doesn't cause my Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) to go down.
20. Overload

(o-ver-load)
Definition- A state in which a person feels overburdened by demands.

Example- During this time in college I am experiencing overload due to the upcoming finals I need to study for.
21. Burnout

(burn-out)
Definition- A state of physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive stress.

Example- After a family member passed away in my family I have experienced a burnout due to my excessive stress.
22. Background distressors

(bak-ground-di-stres-er)
Definition- Environment stressors of which people are often unaware.

Example- As an adult it is apparent to me that the bulling I experienced as a child has effected me and is considered a background distressor.
23. Cognitive stress system

(kog-ni-tiv-stres-sis-tuhm)
Definition- The psychological system that governs emotional responses to stressors.

Example- This system helps me not only recognize the stressors' but it also evaluates them based on my concepts' past experiences and emotions.
24. Psychological hardiness

(sahy-kuh-loj-i-kuhl-hahr-dee-nis)
Definition- A personally trait characterized by control, commitment, and challenge.

Example- As a future social worker within CYFD my mother will need to obtain psychological hardiness and with this sense of control.
25. Psychological stress

(sahy-kuh-loj-i-kuhl-stres)
Definition- Stress caused by being in an environment perceived to be beyond one's control and endangering one's well-being.

Example- While working in the grocery store I experienced quite a bit of psychological stress having to deal with the customers.
26. Stress inoculation

(stres-ih-nok-yuh-ley-shuhn)
Definition- Newer stress management technique in which a person consciously tries to prepare ahead of time for potential stressors.

Example- I may try stress inoculation prior to a day of a test in school by taking pretests.
27. Downshifting

(down-shift-ing)
Definition- Conscious attempt to simplify life in an effort to reduce the stresses and strains of modern living.

Example- Taking a step back is typically known as downshifting.
28. Hypnosis

(hyp-no-sis)
Definition- A process that allows people to become unusually responsive to suggestion.

Example- Hypnosis may be recommended by a therapist dealing with a past traumatic experience.
29. Meditation

(med-i-ta-tion)
Definition- A relaxation technique that involves focusing on a word or symbol, controlling breathing, and getting in touch with the inner self.

Example- I don't know much about meditation but believe it may be a technique to aid in my ability of test taking.
30. Biofeedback

(bahy-oh-feed-bak)
Definition- A technique that involves self-monitoring by machine of physical responses to stress and attempts to control the responses.

Example- Biofeedback can help me control my stress and the responses to my homework in college.
31. Mindfulness

(mind-ful-ness)
Definition-The ability to be fully present in the moment.

Example- I would like to learn the technique of mindfulness there for I could fully experience the moment at hand.
