The cognitive process people use to make sense out of the environment by selecting, organising and interpreting information

What are the three steps involved in perception?

What are the three things perception can be influenced by?
- perceiver
- situation
- target
Perceiver
Individual looks at target and attempts to interpret what they see, based on personal characteristics, past experiences etc
Situation
The context in which we see things - time, location, light, heat, colour
Target
The characteristics of the target being observed (e.g. loud vs. quiet)
What is the motivation equation?
Ability x motivation x environmental conditions = performance
Attitude
A cognitive and effective evaluation that predisposes a person to act in a certain way
What are the three components of attitude?
Cognition, affect, behaviour
Cognition
Beliefs, opinions and information
- knowledge of job
- opinions about personal ability
Affect
Feeling and emotions about the object of the attitude
- hating or loving job
Behaviour
Person's intention to behave towards the object of attitude in a certain way
- choosing to turn up early because you enjoy job

Personality
- The set of characteristics that underlie a relatively stable pattern of behaviour in response to ideas, objects or people in the environment
- The relatively stable aspects of someone which distinguishes them from other people and which gives us the basis for trying to predict behaviour
- the unique combination of psychological characteristics that effects how a person reacts and interacts
