28 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
primary reproductive organ of the male which have both an exocrine (sperm production) and an endocrine (testosterone production) function
testes
part of the external genitalia designed to deliver sperm into the female reproductive tract.
penis
outside abdominopelvic cavity housing the paired oval testes
scrotum
elongated structure running up the posterolateral aspect of the testis and capping its superior aspect. forms the first portion of the duct system and provides a site for immature sperm entering it from the testis to complete their maturation process.
epididymis
skin covering penis refecting downward to form a circular fold of skin
prepuce
runs through the length of the penis to the body exterior.
spongy urethra
2 elongated cylinders of erectile tissue on lateral aspect of penis, which engorge with blood during sexual excitement causing penis to become rigid and enlarged so that it may more adequately serve as a penetrating device.
corpus cavernosum
the single ventral elongated cylinder of erectile tissue surrounding the penile urethra.
corpus spongiosum
prostatic urethra in turn empties into this before going on to the spongy urethra when ejaculation occurs.
membranous urethra
part of urethra in which during ejaculation empties into the membranous urethra.
prostatic urethra
arches superiorly from the epididymis, passes through the inguinal canal into the pelvic cavity, and courses over the superior aspect of the urinary bladder. (sperm duct)
ductus (vas) deferens
not part of the reproductive system. releases digested food.
anus
tiny, pea-shaped glands inferior to the prostate. produce thick, clear, alkaline mucus that drains into the membranous urethra. secretion neutralizes traces of acidic urine in the urethra just prior to ejaculation of semen.
bulbourethral gland
secretes a milky fluid into the urethra which plays a role in activating the sperm
prostate gland
holds the digested food before leaving anus after bowel movement
rectum
the terminus of the ductus deferens enlarges to form the region called the ampulla, which empties into this duct.
ejaculatory duct
produce about 70% of seminal fluid, lie at the posterior wall of the urinary bladder close to the terminus of the ductus deferens. Produces a viscous alkaline secretion containing fructose (a simple sugar) and other substances that nourish the sperm passing through the tract of that promote the fertilizing capability of sperm in some way.
seminal vesicle
holds urine before it is released during urination.
urinary bladder
carries liquid to urinary bladder.
ureter
In life, the ductus deferens is enclosed along with blood vessels and nerves in a connective tissue sheath called the _________
spermatic cord
sperm forming factories
seminiferous tubules
sperm that has not yet entered the epididymis or is still in the lumen
immature sperm
primitive stem cells found at the tubule periphery, dividing extensively to build up the stem cell line.
spermatogenic cells
produce testosterone, the hormonal product of the testis. located between the seminiferous tubules and softly padded with connective tissue
interstitial cells
contains DNA or genetic information
sperm head
outside of the nucleus, contains enzymes that cause sperm head to penetrate female egg in reproduction.
acrosome
centriole which gives rise to the filaments that structure the sperm tail
midpiece
typical flagellum produced by a centriole. when powered by ATP it propels the sperm
tail
