How did WWII end the Great Depression?

Factories reopened and gave many people jobs making tanks, airplanes, weapons,ammunition,uniforms, and other things needed for the war.

What was the roll of women in WWII?

Home-They toke over the rolls of men in factories.


Armed forces-They were nurses,drove ambulances,clerks for generals,sergeants,etc., drew maps, flew airplanes with supplies, but they were not allowed in combat.

How was propaganda used during WWII?

It encouraged support for the war.

What is rationing?

It limited Americans on what they could buy so there was enough for soldiers to have what they needed. Some rationed items were butter, sugar, meat, gasoline, and oil

What happened with the Japanese Americans during WWII?

Japanese Americans were forced into prison-like camps called relocation or internment camps. They were forced to sell their homes, businesses, and all belongings



What was the Allies strategy for winning WWII?

To invade North America first and move up to Italy. Also, to surround Germany on all sides.

D-Day

D-Day was on June 6, 1944. It was lead by General Eisenhower. Millions of soldiers were greeted on the shores of Normandy, France by German gunfire. The Allies did win but but thousands were killed.

The "Big Three"

The "Big Three" were the main leaders of the Allies. They were Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin

How did the war end in Europe?

With American and British troops pushing west and Soviet troops pushing east, they finally met in May 1945 near Berlin. German military leaders surrendered on May 8, 1945. This was known as V-E Day. Victory in Europe. Hitler killed himself so he would not have to suffer the punishment for the war crimes he had committed.

The Holocaust

Holocaust means "mass killings". This is what resulted of Hitler's plan to get rid of all the "undesirables" and people who he felt were beneath him. Over 6 million Jews were killed by disease, gas, being shot, starvation, or while being used for experiments.

Island Hopping

Island hopping is a strategy used by the Allies. They would "hop" from island to island taking control of all of them on their way to Japan. This was a costly plan because many lives were lost. The rest of the Allies were bombing Japan from the air at this time.

Ending the war in the Pacific

President Truman made the decision to drop two Atomic bombs on Japan. The first one was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. On August 9, three days later, another on was dropped on Nagasaki. The Japanese surrendered on August 14,1945 and we finally had V-J Day.

Changes in technology

Planes were now used as bombers, to transport paratroopers, and they could take off from airplane carriers at sea. Some other new tools were, anti-aircraft guns, radars,two-way radios, atomic bombs, code talk from the Navajo people, new and improved medicine, and a mosquito killer called DDT.
