The author's method of acquainting the reader with the characters
Characterization
Through exposition the author makes a direct statement about a character
Direct characterization
The author allows the reader to learn about the character in more subtle ways.
1.The character's own words and thoughts
2.The character's own actions

Indirect characterization
Characters that play an important part in the plot of a story
Major characters
The main character around whom the plot centers
Protagonist
The character that is the primary opponent of the protagonist
Antagonist
A character constructed around one or two character traits and who does not
change during a story
Flat(static)character
A character with sufficient complexity to be able to change during a story
Round(dynamic)character
A character who lacks individualizing characteristics and behaves exactly as expected to the point of being boring.Sometimes a stereotype is used to represent a single characteristic such as evil,goodness,pride,stupidity,etc.
Stereotype
Speech that reflects the pronunciation and grammar of a particular culture.Dialect is used to enhance characterization.

The arrangement of events in a story.The plot may be presented in chronological order or through flashback

Chronological order
An interruption in the action of a story,shifting back to an earlier time.The purpose of flashback is to supply information necessary to understand the characters or plot

Foreshadowing
The beginning of the story;major characters are introduced and the setting established
Exposition
Conflicts that develop between the protagonist and the antagonist
Rising action
The point of greatest interest and highest emotional impact for the reader;a turning point for the protagonist
