Railroad Strike of 1977

Wages and Jobs were cut due to a shaky economy and railroads rate wars. Govt asked press to order strikers back to work. STrike ended with no gains. But helped fire labor movement!!!

Haymarket

Workers demanded a 8-hour work day when 60-hour work weeks were common. Was not successful set back the labor movement and made unions seem like radicals and violent anarchists

Homestead Strike

Company cut pay and hours, closed mills and manager would not negotiate with union. WOrkers fired on detectives who were to break up the strike. Called in militia. Not successful many workers blacklisted and plant reopned with non strikers and loner days and pay cuts

Pullman Strike

Workers of Pulman received wage cuts. House's rent became higher. Grover CLeveland sent in trrops. Not successful workers did not get rents lowered

Shirtwaist Strike

Wanted better working conditions. WOmen wanted higher wages. Negotiated a settlement with factory in which workers won some concessions and wages and conditions. Not successful Factory refused to sign agreement resuming buisness

LAwrence Strike

STate law reduced hours from 56 to 54. Mill owners speeded up looms and reduced workers pay. Militia ordered Lawrence to keep strikers in line. Was successful the american Woolen co. meta all the strikers' demands
