Knights of Labor organized, 1869
One of the first labor unions which gave laborers the ability to gain changes in their work such as shorter hours, better pay, and improved working conditions. They were influential and could influence companies.
Transcontinental Railroad (Union Pacific to Central Pacific), 1869
It for the first time in history connected the east coast to the west. It provided a safe and fast way for settlers to cross the country. It allowed for a more mobile America and increased trade.
Homestead Strike at Carnegie Steel, 1892
This was a huge setback for labor and unions. Many workers gave up hope for rights at work and it gave power to the corporations over the workers.
Miner Strike in Idaho, 1892
This was a setback for labor unions and resulted in the formation of the Western Federation of Miners the following year.
Populist- Omaha Platform, 1892
It lobbied on the behalf of the people. Its platform included the eight hour work day and strong and permanent labor unions.
Anthracite Coal Strike, 1902
It was the first strike that the federal government intervened in as a neutral party. Both sides made compromises but in general was declared a win for labor unions as they got paid more money for less hours.
WPA established, 1935
It provided millions of jobs to the unemployed.
Wagner Act, 1935
This act encouraged the formation of unions and increased their activity. It established the National Labor Relations Board.
Congress of Industrial Organization (CIO) organized, 1935
It was a federation of unions that helped industrial unions.
Taft- Hartley Act, 1947
It set labor unions back by restricting some actions such as strikes and boycotts. It also prohibited some groups from running labor unions.
Federal Employee Loyalty Program, 1947
Federal employees had to take a loyalty oath. It was created as a way to fight communism in the government.
Haymarket Square Bombing, 1886
This incident caused public opinion to turn against labor unions and as a result the Knights of labor would ultimately fail. It also showed the division between the classes.
American Federation of Labor formed, 1886
It was the first labor union of purely skilled labor workers and as a result lasted for many decades. It proved an effective way for workers to gain more rights. It helped to regain public opinion after the Knights of Labor and helped labor unions to gain popularity.
Pullman Strike, 1894
It ended in defeat for labor and the court cases of Illinois v. Debs (1895) decided that government was justified in stopping the strike. This case went against labor.
The Clayton Antitrust Act, 1914
Although similar to the Sherman Antitrust act which came before it, this act specifically exempted labor unions from being targeted by antitrust actions.
Fair Labor Standards Act, 1938
It established minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and child labor standards.
