Fibrous Joints
Three Types:
Sydesmoses
Sutures
Gomphoses
Sutures
Synarthrodial Joints
- immoveable
Sydesmoses Joints
Ampiarthrodial
- slightly moveable
Gomphoses
Apiarthrodial
-limited movement
Cartilagnous Joints
Allow little or not movement; these joints are synarthrodial or ampiarthrodial; held together by two cartilages: symphyses & synchondroses.
Symphyses
-the presence of a broad, flattened disk of fibrocartilage
-amphiarthrodial
ex. intervertebral disks, symphsis pubis
Synchondroses
temporary form of joint
-synarthrodial
ex. epiphyseal plates
Synovial Joints
fibrous capsule that contain synovial fluid.
-diarthrodial
ex. joint cavity,
Plane (gliding joints)
a sliding of gliding motion between the articulating surfaces.
ex. intermetacarpal, carpometacarpal, intercarpal joints of hand and wrist. The right and left lateral atlantoaxial joints between C1 & C2.
Ginglymus (hinge joints)
flexion and extension movements
ex. interphalangeal joints of fingers and toes, elbow joint.
Trochoid (Pivot Joints)
rotational movement
ex. proximal & distal radiolunar joints of the forearm, joing between the 1st and 2nd cervial vertebrae.
Ellipsoid Joints
flexion and extension; abduction and adduction; Circumduction also occurs
ex. 2nd thru 5th metacarpophalangeal joints of fingers, wrist joint, metatarsophalangeal joints of toes.
Sellar (Saddle Joints)
flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, circumduction
ex. first carpometacarpal joint
Spheroidal (Ball & Socket Joints)
flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, circumduction, medial, lateral rotation.
ex. hip joint, shoulder joint
Bicondylar Joint
moves in single direction, permit limited rotation.
ex. knee, temporomandibular joints (TMJ- jaw)
