Piedmont and the Crimean War,

1853 to 1856.

Why was the Crimean war fought?

The Crimean war was fought between 1853 and 1856. It was a result of the breaking up of the Ottoman Empire and the refusal of France and Britain to allow Russia to become stronger as a result.

Whose side did Sardinia join?

How many soldiers were sent?

How did they get on?

Victor Emmanuel wanted Sardinia to join in on the side of the French and the British.

15,000 were sent and its soldiers fought well.

Why did VE get involved in the Crimean War? - after all it had little to do with Piedmont!

Didn't want another "superpower" in the Mediterranean.

Would make Piedmont look important and powerful.

Would give them a place at the Peace Conference that always ended a war AND ....

AND - don't hold me in suspense!

What's the final reason?

Would make Britain and France grateful and Cavour and VE had come to realise that without the help of a "super-power!" they could not overcome the Austrians, the Pope and the Bourbons

Did Austria join the Crimean War?

Yes - but only at the last minute when Russia couldn't win. The British and the French were not impressed!

How did Cavour get on at the Peace Treaty?

He did well. He stressed - to people that were wanting to end a horrible war - that the most serious threat to peace was the "Italian problem."

I've heard of the "Italian Job" - but what's the Italian problem?

Is Cavour saying that Italians are a problem?

No - the problem is other people messing-up Italy. This "sticking their nose in" meant that there could be another war in Italy

(1) The Austrians encroached on Italian land

(2) The pope misruled the central Italian provinces

(3) The Spanish Bourbon dynasty in the south were autocratic rulers

Did Cavour say whether the Pope, the Bourbons or the Austrians was the biggest of these three problems?

Definitely Austria - they were the chief cause of the problem.

How did the Frence react to this?

The relationships became strong and France saw Piedmont as a friend that needed help and Unification as no longer a threat.

Napoleon asked, "What can I do for Italy?"

If you believe in "Real Politick" and that this was all a "cunning plot" then Step 1of Unification was completed and Step 2 would soon begin.

What was Step 2 going to be ?

Telling Napoleon what he could do for Italy!
