protostomes
-Great: pro=the first; stoma= stoma

-Found in echinoderms and chordates
Deuterostomes
-deutero: the seconds ; stoma : mouth
-The anus forms and then the mouth
Found in arthropods, annelids, and molluscs
Body Symmetry
Animals show different patterns of body symmetry there are three main groups of symmetry:
1. Asymmetry
2. Radical symmetry
3. Bilateral symmetry
Assymetry
-shows no particular pattern of symmetry
-THere is no line of bisection that exists that could divide the organisms into similar looking halves or parts
-Example: Phyllum Porifera, the sponges
Radial Symmetry
-There is more than one hypothetical bisection that can be visualized --> it can be cu into several equal slices like a pie
-examples: cnidarians and echinoderms
Bilateral Symmetry
-only one hypothetical bisection can be visualized
-the lines can bisect the organisms into two somewhat equal halves.
-Examples: most of the phyla
Coelom
the gut
in greek means hollow
