Internet

A worldwide network of computer networks that use the TCP/IP network protocols to facilitate data transmission and exchange. Also known as "CyberSpace."

World Wide Web

Computer network consisting of a collection of Internet web sites that offer text, graphics, sound, video and animation resources through the hypertext transfer protocol (http). Web pages hosted on web servers accessed by web browsers.

HTML

HyperText Markup Language. The coding language of web pages.

HTTP

HyperText Transfer Protocol. The system that defines how web pages and media are requested and transferred between servers and browsers.

FTP

File Transfer Protocol. A system for moving files over the Internet from one computer to another.

Server

A networked computer that provides some kind of service or information.

IP Address

A numeric identifier for a computer or device on a network. An IP address has four or six numbers from 0 to 255 separated by periods. 10.5.71.255

Browser

The client software that requests and displays web pages. Current web browsers include Internet Explorer (Windows only), Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Camino and Opera.

Domain Name

A name that corresponds with a specific IP address.

w3C

World Wide Web Consortium. A consortium if many companies and organizations that "exists to develop common standards for the evolution of the World Wide Web." Based at the Massachusetts Institute of the technology in Boston and CERN in Switzerland.

JPEG

A lossy graphics compression format developed by the Joint Photographers Expert Group. It is a multipurpose photo and graphics format that offers a range of quality levels. Does NOT support transparency.

Applet

A self-contained, mini-executible program, such as one written in the Java programming language. Can be added to a web pages.

CSS

Cascading Style Sheets. An addition to HTML for controlling presentation of a web page, including color, type, alignment and images, etc.

Compression

A method for reducing the file size of a document. Different file formats use different compression techniques.

Dithering

The approximation of a color by mixing pixels of similar colors.

Flash

A multimedia format for the delivery of animation, interactivity. Video and audio clips on the web.

GIF

Graphic Interchange Format. Common file format of web graphic images. Only supports 256 colors. Good for simple graphics, not photos. Supports transparency and animation.

Image Map

A single image that contains multiple hyperlinks.

PNG portable Network Graphic

A versatile and newer web photo and graphic format. Also supports transparency levels, auto correction levels and a lossless compression scheme.

ISP

Internet Service Provider. A company or organization that provides access to the Internet.

Anti-Aliasing

A slight blur added to the edges of objects and type in bitmapped (pixel-based) graphics to smooth out the edges.

HTTPS

Indicates a secure HTTP Protocol transaction. Common for e-commerce (online shopping) and bank web sites.

Lossy

A type of compression in which data is thrown out to reduce file size. Used by JPEG graphics.

Java

A cross platform, objdct-oriented programming language that can be used for making applets for the web.

Lightness

How much white or black is in an image.

MPEG

Motion Picture Experts Group. Standards for video and audio files.

Optimizing

Reducing the file size so it loads faster on a web page, but at the same time, making sure that it still looks good. The most common resolution for web photos and graphics is 72 dpi/ppi.

Pixel

A single square in a graphic image

Quicktime

A popular multimedia format for sharing video and audio files.

HTML 5

Designed to deliver almost everything you want to do online without requiring additional plugins. It does everything from animation to apps, music to Movies, and can also be used to build complicated applications that run in your browser.

Nesting

Placing one set of HTML tags within another tag pair, usually resulting in a combination of styles.

Serif Font

A font that has horizontal slabs at the end if the character strokes, such as, times, Cambria, palatino.

Sans Serif Font

A font without serif, such as, helvetica, arial, geneva
