Jessica Valenti

Video blogger, made a clip about how she was harassed by misogynists since she went online, women resort to online video as a means of producing a counter discourse. Out of 13 comments by men, 11 were hostile towards feminism.

Douglas Kellner

"one must often leave the mainstream to seek out the more radical and distinctive black voices"

Ien Ang

In watching Dallas he notes that the representation of women in mass culture and women's reception of these images are viewed paternalistically. Therefore, members of the female audience are reduced to passive, unwitting and pathetic victims of the commercial culture industry. Ang describes soap operas as a feminine text that lacks an ideological consensus and are filled with ambivalence and contradiction.

Catherine A MacKinnon

The issue of pleasure and how to get it rather than dominance and how to end is is too often presented as the main issue that sexuality presents to feminism.

Micaela Di Leonardo

Anthropologist, thought the statement that women are muted or subordinate mustn't be overstated and there are many speech positions a woman can assume. Women have a wide array of verbal strategies and genres can be considerably more articulate and more actively oppositional than conventional models of gendered speech power allow. MADE THIS POINT: domination and resistance are matters of interactional practice as well as structure.

Liesbet van Zoonen

Internet communications' primarily tend to construct women as online consumers over simplifies the complexity of the matter. The women of YouTube are engaged in the consumption and performance of market based notions of femininity but they also actively resists such dominant role models. HOWEVER: The women of YouTube act as a challenge to her assertion that the male domination of the internet is increasing and this claim overlooks the fact that the women of YouTube are teaching themselves to speak out against sexism.

Democracy vs. Capitalism

Democracy: an idealized form of government used by the elite to control the masses, New Media are invariably seen as promoting democracy (NEW MEDIA = DEMOCRACY)

Capitalism: a dominant mode of economic organization that perpetuates inequality, most modern media systems are owned by the capitalist class, mass media is used to align mass thought and action with the needs of major corporations and the global ruling elite. (CAPITALISM: MASS MEDIA)

Filters

Ownership, advertising, sourcing, flak, and anticommunist ideology - work as "filters" through which info must pass and that individually and often in additive fashion they help shape media choices

Agenda Setting

Describes a very powerful influence of the media - the ability to tell US what issues are important...who determines what will be a major news story? It is the creation of public awareness and concern of salient issues by the news media.

Framing

Institutions and powerful groups are able to influence the way an issue or event is perceived by the public. This is a form of opinion leadership that also occurs on a small scale, via experts, authorities, leaders and others within social networks. It is how an issue is FRAMED. Example: if you say Alberta oil is clean oil, or if you say one group of people is bad.

Gatekeepers

Commercial media is a gate-keeping system. Info is filtered to the public by the media. The internet partially erodes the ability of corporate media to control access. Similar process: taste making (influential in the determination of current taste).

Ideology

Often manifested as beliefs that a subordinate group holds which primarily serve the interests of a dominant group. Where power & ideas connect. Forms the basis of economic or political theory or policy.

Advertising

"Propaganda on behalf of consumption" - John Kenneth Galbriath. A process dominated by males that leads to pornographication within the representation of females. Women's social status is denigrated by the pornographication giving a message to men on women's sexual availability and their status as little more than a sex object.

Standardization

The promotion of sameness for economic efficiency and social control (conformity). A dominant characteristic of capitalist economies and social orders. *A threat to biodiversity, food security, and collective intelligence.
